Tips to get you started to living a more natural and organic lifestyle:

Let’s admit it; whenever we hear “live naturally and organically,” it is often associated with food. When thinking of living a more organic lifestyle, many may picture growing our own food, raising our own meat, while living in a cabin with no electricity, right? But guess what?  It’s not all about food! Surprised? We don’t blame you, because it's the same thought for many who are first introduced to the words "natural" and "organic". However, most of us have become so used to all of the conveniences associated with our fast-paced lifestyle that becoming more organic or "healthier" can seem overwhelming. Today's lifestyles have surrounded us with unhealthy products from the materials that are used to build our homes, the foods we eat, the clothes we wear, the toys our children play with and even our cleaning supplies often contain chemicals that jeopardize our health.

Living chemical-free may seem like a luxury to some, after all these products tend to be a little bit pricier, but is it worth the cost? According to environmental health consultants, these chemicals or preservatives can act as an “endocrine disruptor.”  This basically means that all of these chemicals we are exposed to everyday actually interfere with our own natural hormones, which can lead to worsening conditions and more devastating health problems.  By eliminating some of these chemicals, you can improve your health and lower your risk of contracting many diseases.

It also benefits our environment to choose to live more organically as many of these same chemicals and preservatives not only make people sick, but also damage the environment and therefore contribute to poorer health for all living things.

Switching to a more organic lifestyle plan can seem overwhelming, so here are a few tips to help get you started:

1.  Switch it up:

Start with the products you use most often and switch out just one in each category!  For example, if you drink milk, switch to organic milk (without pesticides and growth hormones) or switch out one health and beauty product to an all-natural one for a start.

2. Be picky about what goes ON your body:

Your skin is the largest organ in the body and it absorbs almost everything that we put on it such as lipsticks, lotions, or deodorant. It is important we don’t allow unwanted ingredients to become absorbed that can possibly pose health risks to us.  Here are a few of our favorite products:

3. Avoid “fragrance” products:

Be cautious of products with the word "fragrance" on the label. These contain phthalates, which are known to interfere with our hormones.  Pick those that are made from essential oils instead.

4. Go fresh and support local farmers:

Eating organic is super important, so get out and try shopping at your local farmers' market. Check out Freight House Farmers Market, which is located in downtown Davenport open on Saturdays and Sundays throughout the summer. You can find some great deals and excellent food choices that are grown locally and without all the dangerous chemicals that are harmful to all of us.

5. Try gardening:

Try growing your own fruits and/or vegetables.  Many food items can even be grown in pots or planter boxes and directions can easily be found online, especially on Pinterest.

6. DIY:

Make your own products to use in your home. Stop in and pick up your own Thieves Essential Oil cleaner that can be used to clean most anything and leaves your house smelling amazing!

7. Keep out contaminates:

Remove your shoes at the front door. Shoes track in lead, pesticides, germs, and other pollutants, which contaminate our carpets and floors. Wipe stroller wheels if brought inside and make a habit of keeping pet paws wiped clean each time they come in from outside.

While it may seem almost impossible in today’s society to live a completely organic lifestyle, you need to keep in mind that even small changes can make a huge difference to both the environment and your health and the overall health of your entire family.
