Healthy Halloween Tips and Tricks

Chiropractic care is all about prevention and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Halloween is right around the corner and this can be hard to do because of all the candy and junk food lying around the house. Fortunately, there are many ways to stay healthy at this sugary time of year. Exercising and making healthy lifestyle choices can help. Here are a few tips to help you keep your eye on the health of you and your kids!

Start Walking

If you’re going to crush Halloween this year, then you must be ready for all that walking. Try to develop a healthy habit and incorporate this into your day by going on a 20 to 30-minute walk after dinner. This will help to tone you up in preparation for all that trick-or-treating and will also help you to stay healthy as cooler temperatures arrive and people tend to become less active.

Don’t forget to stretch!  Stretches can also help you work off the calories from eating Halloween candy and junk food. Doing stretches can help you warm up for your trip around the neighborhood when it’s time to go trick-or-treating. Your chiropractor can teach you a variety exercises that can help you warm up your muscles and burn off some energy.  Make sure to do some stretches before trick-or-treating, or any time before going on a walk or run.

Eat a Healthy Meal before going Trick or Treating

On Halloween, it’s a good idea to eat a filling, healthy dinner before going out trick-or-treating with your kids. This will make it easier for you and your children to resist stuffing yourself on candy before going to bed.

Trick-Or-Treating Goals

Your goal may be to have the best costume on the block or maybe to get twice as much candy as last year. Whatever your goal, it’s important to also set goals about your Halloween snacks to keep health in mind. A great way is to set an exercise goal(s), for example the goal of walking for 20 minutes for every piece or two of candy you have. Come up with a route for you and your family before the big day to help you meet your walking and candy eating goals.

Freeze It

If you want to remove some of the temptation from all the Halloween candy that will be sitting around your house, then put it in the freezer. Have you ever tried to bite into a frozen candy bar? Yeah, it’s difficult to do, but that’s the point. If you have the candy sitting around, then you can mindlessly pop it into your mouth as you walk by. Make it harder for you and your kids to go crazy and eat all the Halloween candy in one sitting by storing it in the freezer. That way, you have to work a little to enjoy it and you’ll likely savor it more slowly.

See Your Chiropractor

Remember, Halloween is just the beginning. Soon will be Thanksgiving and Christmas, which can be a slippery slope when it comes to your health and wellness. By seeing your chiropractor regularly, you can help to correct any joint restrictions and dysfunctions that may be contributing to your aches and pains. This will also help to support a healthy immune system, which is very important as cold and flu season approaches!
